General Definition of Work
The purpose of this position is to provide maintenance and response of equipment, apparatus, and facilities. In addition, this position will support the buildings and grounds of all Township properties including historic cemeteries, office buildings, stations, gardens and training facility. This position requires a positive, friendly attitude and ability to maintain composure under sometimes difficult or stressful circumstances.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and/or provide in-house apparatus and equipment testing, repairs, preventive maintenance, and records management.
  • Complete routine checks on all properties, apparatus and equipment and identify if an outside vendor needs to be contracted. Coordinate all appointments for service and meet with service providers.
  • Ability and knowledge to perform basic maintenance on all Township/ Fire Department properties including routine filter changes, lighting, signage and maintenance of flag poles.
  • Develop a preventative maintenance schedule and determine projected replacement schedule.
  • Weekly mowing of all Township and Fire Department properties: 2 Fire Stations, Fire & Township HQ, 4 Cemeteries & Community Garden and Training Grounds.
  • Maintain all plantings, mulch, trees, landscaping and irrigation systems. Maintain a fertilization and turf maintenance schedule.
  • Maintenance of the components of the Community Garden including watering systems, regular or routine maintenance of structures, fixtures, oversight of the general garden conditions.
  • Coordinate the purchase of all maintenance supplies and materials

  • Shall review general orders and standard operating guidelines and present recommendations for improvement
  • Assists with the development of the annual budget and expenditures for the division
  • Create and interpret reports regarding division activities,
  • Ensure compliance of local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Ability to serve on 24-hour call and respond swiftly, rationally, and decisively to emergency situations.
  • Ability to work extended hours, occasionally work weekend and/or evening hours, and occasionally travel out of town for meetings and training, sometimes overnight.
  • Obtain and distribute items such as supplies, uniforms, equipment and tools for the stations and personnel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Comprehension skills in various Federal, State, and Local Law, policy manuals, operating guidelines, and record management systems. Information processing skills in financial reports, performance measurements and evaluations, and various technical reports. Knowledge of equipment used such as photocopier, audiovisual equipment, cameras, computer, telephone, codes, laws, and ordinance books and measuring devices.

Education and Experience

5 years’ experience with buildings, grounds and fleet maintenance

Physical Demands

This work requires regular heavy lifting of objects; work regularly requires speaking, hearing, pushing, pulling, standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands, lifting, and occasionally requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, smelling, and repetitive motions; work requires close
vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to vibration, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places and exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and working with explosives; work is generally in a loud noise location.

Special Requirements

  • Must possess at time of hire a valid State of Indiana driver’s license.
  • May not have a felony conviction or disqualifying criminal history.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and communicate using the English language.
